What Now? “Walking in Your God-Given Purpose” | Pastor Chris Searcy | 5.18.25

What Now?
Walking in Your God-Given Purpose”

I. INTRODUCTION: WHY WERE HERE TODAY

  • Celebrate the graduates—from kindergarten to Ph.D.
  • Today is a celebration…. I want to answer the most commonly asked question
  • The real question isnt just Whats next?” but Why did God create me, and what is He asking me to do?”

II. PURPOSE: THE REASON YOU WERE CREATED

Definition: Purpose is the reason for which something was created.

A. You Were Created by God for a Reason

Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

B. Your Ultimate Purpose Is to:

  1. Worship God
    Isaiah 43:7
Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.

    John 4:23
The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth...
  2. Make Him Known
    Matthew 28:19–20
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations...

    2 Corinthians 5:20
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ...
  3. Bring Glory to His Name
    1 Corinthians 10:31
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

III. PURPOSE IS UNIVERSAL — ASSIGNMENT IS UNIQUE

You can walk in purpose anywhere doing anything—as long as youre doing it to worship God, make Him known, and glorify Him.

Biblical Examples Across Vocations:

Name

Role

How They Walked in Purpose

Lydia

Businesswoman

Hosted and supported the early church (Acts 16:14–15)

Paul

Tentmaker + Apostle

Made Christ known everywhere (Acts 18:1–4)

Priscilla & Aquila

Married Tradespeople

Taught Apollos truth more accurately (Acts 18:26)

Moses

Shepherd turned Deliverer

Followed God’s assignment

Mary

Mother

Nurtured and supported Christ's mission (Luke 1:38)

Whether youre a stay-at-home mom, street preacher, student, coach, etc—you can walk in your purpose anywhere.

IV. WHAT YOURE REALLY ASKING: WHAT IS MY ASSIGNMENT?”

Assignment is the specific task, role, or season-based opportunity through which your purpose is expressed.

But before we talk about that, I have to interrupt your question with this:

V. WHY WALKING IN YOUR GOD-GIVEN ASSIGNMENT IS URGENT

Mark 8:36
For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

  • There are people who had money, fame, and influence… but without purpose and assignment, life felt empty.

Real-World Examples of Misaligned Success:

Name

Success

Tragic End

Anthony Bourdain

Beloved chef and TV host

Died by suicide

$1.2 million

Chris Lighty

Music executive

Died by suicide

$30 million

Chester Bennington (Linkin Park)

Global music icon

Died by suicide

$30 million

Robin Williams

Oscar-winning actor

Died by suicide

$50 million

Kate Spade

Billion-dollar fashion empire

Died by suicide

$100 million

Point: You can accomplish every dream youve ever had—and still feel meaningless if you're not walking in God's assignment.

VI. HOW TO FIND YOUR GOD-GIVEN ASSIGNMENT

1. Ask two simple questions:

  • What am I good at?
  • What do I have a deep desire or affinity for?

Romans 11:29
For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

My Own Story

  • I wanted to play football. Thought I was going to the league.
  • Didnt get the looks. No scholarships.
  • But I could talk (got me in trouble too!)
  • That gift led me into broadcast journalism... even got to cover the Crimson Tide.
  • That moment taught me: Just because you love it doesnt mean youre gifted for it. And just because youre gifted for it doesnt mean its your ultimate assignment.

Gift + Desire = Assignment (Potentially)

3. A Helpful Question:

What do I do so well that someone would be willing to pay me for it?”

  • Most of the time the answer will point straight to your assignment.
  • Some times it wont—but by process of elimination you are closer to finding it.

VII. THREE TRUTHS ABOUT ASSIGNMENT

  1. Assignment Changes (Joseph)
    • God may call you to different assignments in different seasons
(Joseph: pit palace prison prime minister).
  1. Assignment Always Serves Purpose
    • It will always lead to you worshiping God, making Him known, and glorifying Him.
  1. Assignment Requires Stewardship
    Colossians 3:23–24
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord... You are serving the Lord Christ.

VIII. FINAL CHARGE TO GRADUATES

  • Whether youre graduating kindergarten or college…
  • Dont just chase a career—walk in your calling.
  • Dont just seek success—seek significance in Christ.
  • Dont just ask Whats next?”—ask God, where do You want to use me?”

IX. CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY

  • I want to take a moment to celebrate how proud I am of this community.
  • Ive been seeing the pictures, the posts—the way youre showing up for each other organically forming community.
  • Thats the culture of the Kingdoma family showing up for family.

Moms, You Matter | Pastor Chirs Searcy | 5.11.25

Moms, You Matter

The God-ordained influence of mothers in shaping lives and society

I. Biblical Foundation: God’s High Calling for Mothers

Genesis 3:20

"The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living."

→ From the very beginning, woman was named in connection with her role as the life-

giver—mother of all living.

Proverbs 31:25-28

25 Strength and dignity are her clothing,

and she laughs at the time to come.

26 She opens her mouth with wisdom,

and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

27 She looks well to the ways of her household

and does not eat the bread of idleness.

28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;

her husband also, and he praises her:

Isaiah 66:13

"As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted

in Jerusalem."

→ God compares His own nurturing comfort to that of a mother.

II. The Roles: Fathers guard the gate, Mothers make the home!

Statistics for present fathers largely result in the greater:

moral boundaries, discipline, protection, and deterrence from destructive behavior!

ex.

Up to 85% of youths in prison come from fatherless homes.

Children without fathers are 75% more likely to abuse drugs.

63% of youth suicides occur in father-absent homes.

90% of runaway children come from fatherless homes.

Does that mean moms don’t matter… Of course not… It means they provide

something different!

Fathers keep the evil away, Mothers introduce the good!

Involved Mothers improve the child’s:

Emotional development

Cognitive and academic performance

Long-term social health

The Brain

Children with nurturing mothers show 10% larger hippocampus growth (learning &

memory area)

Children with involved mothers are more likely to have higher IQs by age 4.

Children whose mothers read to them daily are 2x more likely to reach reading

proficiency by 3rd grade.

Preschoolers with affectionate mothers show advanced brain development in memory

and learning areas.

Mothers who sing or talk to their babies daily enhance language acquisition by 20–30%

The Heart

Children with supportive mothers are 50% less likely to develop anxiety or depression.

Children with emotionally available mothers have better emotional regulation skills.

Children with supportive moms are 31% more likely to have strong peer

relationships

Mothers who breastfeed help reduce infant mortality by up to 21% in the first year

Mothers who eat meals with their children 5x per week reduce risky teen behavior

by 33%

The Hand

Students with mothers who help with homework are 81% more likely to complete

high school

Mothers who regularly attend religious services raise children who are 3x more

likely to keep the faith into adulthood

MOMS……. YOU MATTER!!!!!!

You are the love, you are the warmth.

The first 5 years of life are when 90% of a child’s brain develops. Nurture and love

stimulate critical neural connections for learning and emotional regulation.

Neglect in the first 2 years of life can lead to permanent developmental and emotional

delays.

Don’t let anyone tell you your God given role isn’t important

Signs of the End of the Age

Matthew 24:10-12

10 And then many will fall away[ a ] and betray one another and hate one

another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And

because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.

Godlessness in the Last Days

2 Timothy 3:1-5

3 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of

difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant,

abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless,

unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving

good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather

than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its

power. Avoid such people.

Mothers you matter!!!!

You standing in solidarity with fathers are all that stand between your offspring

and Lawlessness!!!!

Imago Dei "The High Calling of God for Women” | Pastor Chris Searcy | 5.4.25

Imago Dei

"The High Calling of God for Women”

I. Introduction: Honoring the Women God Created

Genesis 1:27 – “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created

him; male and female he created them.”

Hebrew:

אָדָם (ʾāḏām) – Strong’s H120 - Mankind, humankind, human being - Not Gender

specific.

Greek:

ἄνθρωπος (anthrōpos) - “And God made the human (anthrōpos)”

II. God’s Original Design for Women in Marriage

Genesis 2:18-24

• God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit

for him.” (v.18)

• Woman was created to be a “helper suitable” (ezer kenegdo) – a strong,

fitting partner, not inferior

• Genesis 2:19-23

19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and

every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call

them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its

name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens

and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for

him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he

slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that

the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to

the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones

    and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called Woman (ishshah),

because she was taken out of Man (ish).”

• Married Woman - You were created to labor in the work of the

kingdom, as a helper to a husband.

• Single - You are to devote your time to the Lord, and prepare

yourself if desiring to be married.

Titus 2:3-5

3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not

slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is

good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and

children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind,

and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may

not be reviled.

III. Priscilla and Aquila

Acts 18:1-3, 18-26

• Priscilla and Aquila were a married couple working together as tentmakers

and in ministry

• Together they hosted Paul in their home (Acts 18:3),

• Risked their lives for him (Romans 16:3-4)

• Taught Apollos the way of God more (Acts 18:26)

• Scripture mentions Priscilla’s name first in some passages, showing her active,

honored role (Acts 18:26)

IV. Jesus is your biggest advocate

1. Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well.

John 4:25-26

“25 The woman said to him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ).

When he comes, he will tell us all things.’ 26 Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am

he.’”

2. Jesus defended the woman caught in adultery.

John 8:10-11

“10 Jesus stood up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned

you?’ 11 She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and

from now on sin no more.’”

3. Jesus included women as disciples and ministry supporters.

Luke 8:1-3

“1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the

good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 2 and also some

women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from

whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's

household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their

means.”

4. Jesus first appeared to women after His resurrection and sent them to tell the

disciples.

Matthew 28:5-7

5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus

who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place

where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead,

and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told

you.”

Matthew 28:9-10

9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold

of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and

tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

For His Glory- Joyfulness Stewarding Your Singleness | Pastor Chris Searcy | 4.27.25

"For His Gloryˮ

- Joyfully Stewarding Your Singlenessˮ

Proverbs - in Hebrew “māšāl" (ל ָשׁ ָמ) - A wise saying, A parable

Proverbs 1:1-7

1 The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

2 To know wisdom and instruction,

to understand words of insight,

3 to receive instruction in wise dealing,

in righteousness, justice, and equity;

4 to give prudence to the simple,

knowledge and discretion to the youth—

5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning,

and the one who understands obtain guidance,

6 to understand a proverb and a saying,

the words of the wise and their riddles.

7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;

fools despise wisdom and instruction.

1 Timothy 5:1–2

Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men

as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Today we are expounding on how to find joy in this season

We will move through 3 main topics:

1. Courting vs dating

2. Equally Yoked

3. Godly community

Courting vs Dating

(slow, public deliberate pace, to find out if we are equally yoked)

Genesis 24: 1-4

1 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the Lord had blessed

Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his

household, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh, 3 that

I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of the earth,

that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites,

among whom I dwell, 4 but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife

for my son Isaac.ˮ

The servant went miraculously met

Why did Abraham prohibit a Canaanite woman:

1. The Canaanites Were Spiritually Corrupt

• The Canaanites were known for idolatry, child sacrifice, and immoral religious

practices (Leviticus 18:3–30).

• Abraham knew a wife from that culture could lead Isaacѹs heart away from

the Lord.

Deuteronomy 7:3–4 (ESV)

3 You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or

taking their daughters for your sons,

4 for they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods.

Then the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you, and he would

destroy you quickly.

2. Preserving the Covenant Line

• Isaac was the child of promise — through him, God's covenant with Abraham

would continue.

Genesis 17:19

19 God said, ѼNo, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call

his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting

covenant for his offspring after him.ˮ

• Abraham wanted to protect that promise by ensuring Isaac's wife shared

faith in the one true God, not pagan gods.

Physical attraction cam override Spiritual Discernment.

What are the differences between Courting and Dating

Equally Yoked

2 Corinthians 6:14-16
14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has
righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with
darkness? 15 What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a
believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God
with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,

Deuteronomy 22:10 (ESV)
10 You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.

Amos 3:3 (ESV)
3 Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet?
The yoke imagery speaks to two people pulling in the same direction under
the same leadership

What Happens When Animals Are Unequally Yoked?

1. Effects

• If one animal is stronger or taller, the plow won't move straight.
• The stronger animal will drag or strain the weaker one.
• The field will be plowed crookedly, causing poor harvest results.
• The animals will pull at different paces, leading to resistance and exhaustion.
• Instead of working together, they are constantly working against each other.
• The uneven yoke causes neck sores, bruising, and fatigue, especially for the
smaller or less capable animal.
• Over time, both animals are injured or slowed down.
What being equally yoked looks like
• Both spouses trust Jesus as Lord and Savior.
• Both submit to Godѹs Word as the foundation for life and decisions.
• Christ is not an afterthought—He is the center of the relationship.
• Their passions and callings complement, not compete.
• Theyʼre helping each other to grow spiritually

5
• Unity in how they view money, sex, family, forgiveness, and priorities.
• Maintain values through disagreements and disappointments

You may love that person deeply, but theyʼre pulling in opposite
directions!
and itʼll end hurting you both!
what is equally yoked Priscilla & Aquila

Community

The final component is Godly community!
Romantic relationships arenʼt the only places to experience deep meaningful
connections.

In the 1st century this was their reality:

Acts 2:46–47 (ESV)
46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their
homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God
and having favor with all the people.

Benefits of community:

Sharpening:

Proverbs 27:17
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.

Encouragement:

Hebrews 10:24–25
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not
neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another,
and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Increased Wisdom:

Proverbs 13:20
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer
harm.

God Of The Ordinary | Pastor Chris | 3.30.25

God Of The Ordinary

How God has moved through seemingly ordinary ways to do global-scale Kingdom

change.

1. Abraham Being Chosen

Genesis 12:1–3

3 Promises from God:

Given this Land

Made into a Great Nation

All Families Blessed

Massive covenant to restore humanity… started with one man’s faith.

He died without seeing any of the promises fulfilled.

2. Moses in the Basket

Exodus 2:1–10

God would:

Set His people free

Lead them to the Promised Land

Establish a new covenant

How did it start? A woman placed her baby in a basket to float down a river… just to

save his life.

3. David Being Chosen

1 Samuel 16:1–13

A turning point for the nation

Establishment of a new covenant (an everlasting throne)

A careful process of selection by God

4. God Coming as a Baby

God Himself came to save all of humanity.

He came as a baby, born to two newlyweds.

Not a king in splendor, but a child in a manger.

5. Jesus Calling His Disciples

Matthew 4

A Rabbi tells fishermen and tax collectors to follow Him.

He recruits eleven riders to help build His Kingdom.

The Illusion of Grandiosity

(Wrongly perceived need for all things to be flashy, big, or impressive)

It’s the false expectation that when God moves, it must look big, loud, flashy, or

important by human standards.

Examples:

• David vs. Goliath – Everyone expected a warrior, but God used a shepherd boy

• Elijah on the Mountain – God wasn’t in the wind, earthquake, or fire — He was in

a whisper

• The Cross of Christ – Looked like defeat, but was the greatest victory in history

We often think bands, trumpets, honor, glory, applause, wealth, and riches equal

success and spirituality.

Matthew 13:31–32 — The Mustard Seed

“The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed… the smallest of all seeds, but

grows to be larger than all garden plants and becomes a tree.”

1 Corinthians 1:27

“God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise…”

In a Similar Way…

In the quietness and humbleness of everyday decisions:

God is building and perfecting His bride through your marriage and child-raising.

Get the gravity of this.

Like our fathers before us—

People watching from the outside wouldn’t have known it at the time.

It seems small.

It seems insignificant.

But:

We know we are building marriages that will rob the gates of hell.

We are raising warriors for Christ who will bring revival to this nation.

So Remember:

Your everyday decisions — your small arguments, your quiet prayers, your acts of faith

— bear weight.

They matter.

They are important.

That’s Why Holiness and Sanctification

Matter

We aren’t just here for a good time.

We are building a Kingdom.

Your Marriage:

Produces godly adults

Produces godly offspring

Produces a pure bride for Christ

Revelation 19:7–8 (ESV)

"Let us rejoice and exult and give Him the glory,

for the marriage of the Lamb has come,

and His Bride has made herself ready;

it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure—

for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints."

Colossians 1:21–22 (ESV)

"And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,

He has now reconciled...

in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him..."

Ephesians 5:25–27 (ESV)

"Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word,

so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or

any such thing,

that she might be holy and without blemish."

1 Corinthians 1:27

“God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise…”

Final Word:

If you want to be great in the Kingdom —

Go home.

Love your wife.

Love your husband.

Train your children.

The Two Become One | Pastor Tre Townsley | 2.23.25

The Two Become One

 Genesis 2:18-24 18  And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man

should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”  19  Out

of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every

bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call

them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its

name.  20  So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and

to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper

comparable to him. 21  And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall

on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up

the flesh in its place.  22  Then the rib which the Lord God had taken

from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

23  And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my

flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out

of Man.” 24  Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother

and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

 Marriage is not merely a contract, but it is a covenant

 Malachi 2:14 Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because

the Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth,

With whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion

And your wife by covenant.

 A contract is an agreement between two parties that creates

an obligation to perform or refrain from certain actions or

duties; or the exchange of things. A contract usually has a

term/timeframe it is in effect.

 The biblical understanding of the word covenant is derived

from the Hebrew word b e riyth /ber-eeth’/ (a compact or

alliance made between two parties (me for you). A covenant

is usually for the lifetime and is often sealed with blood.

 Examples of blood covenants: Abrahamic (Genesis 15:9-15),

Mosaic (Exodus 19; Hebrews 9:19-21), New covenant (Luke

22:20)

 The ‘two become one’ does not mean one party ceases to

exist. This expresses a compound unity. Genesis 2:24 uses

the same word expressed in Deuteronomy 6:4—echad,

which means united

 Deuteronomy 6:4  4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God,

the Lord is one!

 This ‘unity’ is a spiritual, emotional, and physical bond

designed by God

 Ephesians 5:31-32 31 For this reason a man shall leave his father

and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one

flesh.  32  This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the

church.

 Spiritual Oneness in Marriage

 Both spouses must be believers. The expression of Christ

uniting with His bride is not a believer uniting with an

unbeliever.

 2 Corinthians 6:14-16a 14  Do not be unequally yoked together with

unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with

lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?  15  And

what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with

an unbeliever?  16  And what agreement has the temple of God with

idols? For you are the temple of the living God.

 Ephesians 5:25-27 25  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ

also loved the church and gave Himself for her,  26  that He

might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the

word,  27  that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not

having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy

and without blemish.

 Marriage has a spiritual purpose

 Malachi 2:14-15 14  Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because

the Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth,

with whom you have dealt treacherously; yet she is your companion

and your wife by covenant. 15  But did He not make them one, having a

remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring.

Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously

with the wife of his youth.

 Emotional and Relational Oneness in Marriage

 Husbands have been given an impossible task.

 Ephesians 5:25 25  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also

loved the church and gave Himself for her

 The only way Jesus was able to give Himself was through

providential help…

 Luke 22:42-44 42  saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away

from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”  43 Then an

angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.  44  And being

in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like

great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

 The only way to ‘1 Corinthians 13’ a woman is through the

strength of the LORD

 4  Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not

parade itself, is not puffed up;  5  does not behave rudely, does not

seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;  6  does not rejoice in

iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;  7  bears all things, believes all things,

hopes all things, endures all things.

 Wives have been given an impossible task

 Ephesians 5:24 24  Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ,

so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

 Genesis 2:18 18  And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man

should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”

 There is only one who is designated ‘The Helper’ -John

14:26 26  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in

My name

 The only way to be a help to your husband is to be filled with

the Helper

 Physical Oneness in Marriage

 Physical intimacy a gift to married couples, but to refrain can

give Satan an area to exploit.

 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 3  Let the husband render to his wife the

affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.  4  The

wife does not have authority over her own body, but the

husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority

over his own body, but the wife does.  5  Do not deprive one another

except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to

fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not

tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

 Being married does not give a license for immorality

 Hebrews 13:4 4  Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed

undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

 Physical intimacy is a large part of the consummation of

husband and wife

 1 Corinthians 6:15-16 15  Do you not know that your bodies are

members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and

make them members of a harlot? Certainly not!  16  Or do you not know

that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the

two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.”

Final Challenge:

 Are you pursuing oneness in your marriage?

 If you’re single, are you preparing yourself to be ready for a

Christ-centered marriage?

Discovering biblical Marriage rolls

Antidote for culture

Antidote: A medicine taken to counteract a particular poison.this is good are there any others

Biblical Teaching VS. Anecdotal

Anecdotal: Based on personal accounts rather than facts or research

Biblical Truth: All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for

reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16)

Anecdotal  Cultural

Examples Biblical Truth (Opposite)

Subjective personal

experiences Objective biblical authority (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Social norms that shift over

time God’s unchanging Word (Isaiah 40:8)

Human reasoning and

Culture’s Edicts

For Men:

Toxic masculinity narrative – Viewing male leadership as oppressive.

Passive husband/fatherhood – Encouraging men to be emotionally absent or uninvolved.

Career over family – Defining success solely by work achievements.

Avoid commitment – Promoting promiscuity and casual relationships.

Emotional suppression – Discouraging men from leading with love and gentleness.

For Women:

Radical feminism – Rejecting submission and respect in marriage.

Independence over partnership – Promoting self-sufficiency over biblical unity.

Career-first mentality – Devaluing homemaking and child-rearing.

Marriage is outdated – Suggesting marriage is unnecessary or restrictive.

Rejection of motherhood – Viewing children as burdens rather than blessings.

For Marriage in General:

Egalitarianism – Eliminating God-ordained roles in marriage.

Sexual fluidity – Redefining gender and marriage itself.

Divorce culture – Treating marriage as disposable.

Personal happiness over commitment – Encouraging self-fulfillment over covenant

faithfulness.

Casual cohabitation – Prioritizing relationships over lifelong commitment.

What does God want from Marriage: Godly Offspring

Malachi 2:14-16

14 But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the LORD was witness between you and the wife

of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by

covenant. 15 Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what

was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of

you be faithless to the wife of your youth. 16 “For the man who does not love his wife but

divorces her, says the LORD, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says

the LORD of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”

1. The Role of Husbands in Marriage

Ephesians 5:25-28, 31-33

25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,

26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the

word,

27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or

any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who

loves his wife loves himself.

31 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the

two shall become one flesh.

32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she

respects her husband.

Colossians 3:19

19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.

1 Peter 3:7

7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to

the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so

that your prayers may not be hindered.

Proverbs 5:18-19

18 Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth,

19 a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be

intoxicated always in her love.

1 Timothy 5:8

8 But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his

household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Psalm 82:3-4

3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the

destitute.

4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Key Responsibilities of Husbands:

• Love sacrificially (as Christ loved the church).

• Sanctify their wives spiritually.

• Live with understanding and show honor.

• Be faithful and rejoice in their wives.

• Avoid harshness and treat them with care.

• Provide

• Protect

2. The Role of Wives in Marriage

Ephesians 5:22-24, 33

22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his

body, and is himself its Savior.

24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to

their husbands.

33 ... and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Colossians 3:18

18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

1 Peter 3:1-6

1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey

the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives,

2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct.

3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold

jewelry, or the clothing you wear—

4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty

of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by

submitting to their own husbands,

6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good

and do not fear anything that is frightening.

Proverbs 31:10-12, 26-27

10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.

11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.

12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.

26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Key Responsibilities of Wives:

• Submit to their husbands as the church submits to Christ.

• Respect their husbands.

• Demonstrate godly conduct to influence their husbands spiritually.

• Cultivate inner beauty with a gentle and quiet spirit.

• Manage the household wisely and with diligence.

3. The Mutual Responsibilities in Marriage

1 Corinthians 7:3-5

3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her

husband.

4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does.

Likewise, the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you

may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not

tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Genesis 2:24

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and

they shall become one flesh.

Malachi 2:14-16

14 But you say, ‘Why does he not?’ Because the Lord was witness between you and the

wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and

your wife by covenant.

15 Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was

the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none

of you be faithless to the wife of your youth.

16 For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her, says the Lord, the God of

Israel, ‘covers his garment with violence,’ says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves in

your spirit, and do not be faithless.

Joint Marital Duties

• Men are called to love sacrificially, lead spiritually, and honor their wives.

• Women are called to submit, respect, and support their husbands.

• Both are to be faithful, fulfill marital duties, and work together in unity.

Strongholds:

Male self preservation, and egalitarianism:

Men are called to lay down their lives as Christ did for their wives.

1. Greek Word Study: Gave Himself Up(παρέδωκεν ἑαυτὸν - paredōken heauton)

A. Greek Breakdown

• παρέδωκεν (paredōken) – gave up, delivered over, surrendered

◦ Used in contexts of betrayal, sacrifice, and divine surrender

• ἑαυτὸν (heauton) – himself

◦ Indicates voluntary action—Jesus chose to lay down His life.

B. Other Biblical Uses of paredōken

This word appears in other passages showing Christ’s voluntary sacrifice:

IV. Hermeneutical Interpretation of Submission in Ephesians 5

1. Submission in the Context of Mutuality (Ephesians 5:21)

• Paul begins by saying, submitting to one another out of reverence for

Christ.

• This means that submission is not a one-sided command but part of mutual

relationships within the church and family.

2. Wives Submitting to Husbands (Ephesians 5:22)

• This is not about oppression or inferiority but about voluntary alignment under

God’s design.

• The model is Christ’s submission to the Father (1 Cor. 15:28).

• The parallel command to husbands (Eph. 5:25) is to love sacrificially, which

means submission is met with self-sacrificial leadership.

3. Submission to Authority in Society

• Romans 13:1 commands submission to government.

• 1 Peter 2:13-14 echoes the same.

• This means submission is part of God’s order, but not absolute—when authority

contradicts God’s law, obedience to God takes precedence (Acts 5:29).

4. Submission to God (James 4:7)

• The highest form of submission is to God Himself.

• It is a voluntary act of trust and obedience.

V. Application and Conclusion

1. Submission is not oppression – Biblical submission is voluntary and mutual,

modeled by Christ Himself.

9. Submission applies to all relationships – marriage, church, government, and

God.

10. Husbands are also called to submission – by loving sacrificially.

11. The ultimate submission is to God – yielding to His will in all areas of life.

The Meaning of Marriage | Pastor Chris Searcy | 2.2.25

The Meaning of Marriage

I. The Context of Ephesians: Unity in Christ Leads to Unity in Marriage

Paul’s overarching theme in Ephesians: Unity in Christ

Ephesians 1:9-10 – God’s plan to unite all things in Christ

Ephesians 2:19-22 – The church is built together as God’s household

Ephesians 4:3-6 – Unity in the Spirit through the bond of peace

Ephesians 5:21-33: Unity in marriage reflects the unity of the church

→ Paul transitions from unity in theology (chapters 1-3)
→ unity in the body (chapter 4)
→ unity in the home (chapter 5)

The home is the foundation of Christian community:
Not the belief system - “Christ is the foundation of the faith”

In Deuteronomy: Moses recounting Isreal’s journey from mount Sinai to the promised land urges Isreal to obey God’s commands…..

He shares with them the greatest commandment…. called the Shema!

Deuteronomy 6:4-10
4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.

7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 10 “And when the LORD your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 then take care lest you forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.

Two questions to ask ourselves:

1. Have we taught this to our children!
2. Have we ourselves forgotten!

God designed it so that:

A Godly marriage builds a Christian home!

Christian homes build strong churches!

Strong churches build a Christian society!

II. The Gravity of Marriage:

A. It’s Gods design

Genesis 1
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.
27 So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

Genesis 2
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”

21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Marriage is Gods design! It is his creation!
You can’t change what is his…

B. Marriage Reflects Christ and the Church

Old Testament:
Isaiah 54:5
5 "For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called."

New Testament:
Ephesians 5:31-32 (quotes Genesis 2:24)
31 "‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.”

Yet to be fulfilled:
Revelation 19:7-9
7 "Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; 8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure—for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.”

The Bible consistently describes marriage as a reflection of Christ’s relationship with the Church—a union of love, sacrifice, and covenant faithfulness

III. The Seriousness of Marriage in God’s Eyes

A. Marriage is a Covenant, Not Just a Contract

In Genesis 2 Marriage was the first institution established by God.

Hebrews 13:4 – "Let marriage be held in honor among all

Malachi 2:16 – “For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the LORD of hosts. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.”

If God hates Divorce how do you think the devil feels about divorce….?

1 Peter 3:7 – Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs of the gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

B. God Tied it to Blessings and Responsibilities

Proverbs 18:22 – "He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord."

1 Peter 3:7 – Husbands must honor their wives or their prayers will be hindered.

1 Timothy 3:2, 4-5 – A qualification for church leadership:

"Husband of one wife… manages his own household well."

IV. What Does Marriage Mean to God?

It is Holy – Hebrews 13:4 – "Let marriage be held in honor among all…"

It is for His Glory – Malachi 2:15 – 15 Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was the one God[g] seeking? Godly offspring.

It is a Reflection of His Faithfulness – Hosea 2:19-20 – 19 And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20 I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord.

It is a Picture of Redemption – Isaiah 54:5 – "Your Maker is your husband…”

Ephesians 5:27 – 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

Closing Challenge:

If marriage represents Christ and the church, are we living that out?

Understand the seriousness of marriage.

Fight for Godly marriages in our midst.

Final Call to Prayer & Reflection
