Are We Giving God Our Best?
I.
OUR GENEROUS GOD.
1.
We are called to be like God.
Ephesians 5:1
Imitate God, therefore, in
everything you do, because you are his dear children. NLT
Matthew 5:43-48
43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate
your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who
persecute you! 45 In
that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven.
For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on
the just and the unjust alike. 46 If you love only those who
love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that
much. 47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you
different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48 But you are
to be perfect, even as your Father in
heaven is perfect. NLT
2.
God is very Generous.
It’s His Nature.
Luke 12:32
32 “So don’t be afraid,
little flock. For it gives your Father great
happiness to give you the Kingdom. NLT
2 Samuel
12:7-9
7 Then Nathan said to
David, “You are that man! The Lord,
the God of Israel, says: I anointed you king of Israel and saved you from the
power of Saul. 8 I gave you your master’s house and his wives
and the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. And if
that had not been enough, I would have given you much, much more. NLT
1 Kings 3:3-14
3 Solomon loved the Lord…so
the king…sacrificed 1,000 burnt offerings. 5 That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and
God said, “What do you want? Ask, and
I will give it to you!” …9 Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people
well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able
to govern this great people of yours?” 11 So God replied,
“Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have
not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—12 I will give you what you asked for! I
will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or
ever will have! 13 And
I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other
king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! NKJV
II.
THE SHOCKED GOD.
Malachi 1:6-8
6 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says to the
priests: “A son honors his father, and a servant respects his master. If I am
your father and master, where are the honor and respect I deserve? You have
shown contempt for my name!
“But you ask, ‘How have we ever shown contempt for your name?’ 7 “You
have shown contempt by offering defiled sacrifices on my altar. “Then you ask,
‘How have we defiled the sacrifices?’ “You defile them by saying the altar of
the Lord deserves no respect.
8 When you give blind
animals as sacrifices, isn’t that wrong? And isn’t it wrong to offer animals
that are crippled and diseased? Try giving gifts like that to your governor,
and see how pleased he is!” says the Lord
of Heaven’s Armies. 8 When you give blind animals as
sacrifices, isn’t that wrong? And isn’t it wrong to offer animals that are
crippled and diseased? Try giving gifts like that to your governor, and see how
pleased he is!” says the Lord of
Heaven’s Armies.
9 “Go ahead, beg God to
be merciful to you! But when you bring that kind of offering, why should he
show you any favor at all?” asks the Lord
of Heaven’s Armies. 10 “How I wish one of you would shut the
Temple doors so that these worthless sacrifices could not be offered! I am not
pleased with you,” says the Lord
of Heaven’s Armies, “and I will not accept your offerings. 11 But
my name is honored by people of other nations from morning till night. All
around the world they offer sweet incense and pure offerings in honor of my
name. For my name is great among the nations,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 12 “But you
dishonor my name with your actions. By bringing contemptible food, you are
saying it’s all right to defile the Lord’s table. 13 You say,
‘It’s too hard to serve the Lord,’
and you turn up your noses at my commands,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “Think of it! Animals that are
stolen and crippled and sick are being presented as offerings! Should I accept
from you such offerings as these?” asks the Lord.
14 “Cursed is the cheat who promises to give a fine ram from
his flock but then sacrifices a defective one to the Lord. For I am a great
king,” says the Lord of Heaven’s
Armies, “and my name is feared among the nations!

Some Relationships require Honor.

2.
Some Relationships require Fear (Deep Respect).

3.
The Priest were Despising His Name.
God
told them what He likes:
Leviticus 22:17-25
17 And the Lord spake
unto Moses, saying, 18 Speak unto Aaron, and to his sons, and
unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them, Whatsoever he be of the
house of Israel, or of the strangers in Israel, that will offer his oblation
for all his vows, and for all his freewill offerings, which they will offer
unto the Lord for a burnt
offering; 19 Ye shall offer at your own will a male without
blemish, of the beeves, of the sheep, or of the goats. 20 But
whatsoever hath a blemish, that shall ye not offer: for it shall not be acceptable
for you. 21 And whosoever offereth a sacrifice of peace
offerings unto the Lord to
accomplish his vow, or a freewill offering in beeves or sheep, it shall be
perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish therein. 22 Blind,
or broken, or maimed, or having a wen, or scurvy, or scabbed, ye shall not
offer these unto the Lord, nor
make an offering by fire of them upon the altar unto the Lord. 23 Either a
bullock or a lamb that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, that
mayest thou offer for a freewill offering; but for a vow it shall not be
accepted. 24 Ye shall not offer unto the Lord that which is bruised, or crushed,
or broken, or cut; neither shall ye make any offering thereof in your land. 25 Neither
from a stranger’s hand shall ye offer the bread of your God of any of these;
because their corruption is in them, and blemishes be in them: they shall not
be accepted for you.
4.
Their Stinginess limited their Blessings.
Malachi 2:1-4
“Listen, you priests—this command is for you! 2 Listen
to me and make up your minds to honor my name,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “or I will bring a terrible curse against
you. I will curse even the blessings you receive. Indeed, I have
already cursed them, because you have not taken my warning to heart. 3 I
will punish your descendants and splatter your faces with the manure from your
festival sacrifices, and I will throw you on the manure pile. 4 Then
at last you will know it was I who sent you this warning so that my covenant
with the Levites can continue,” says the Lord
of Heaven’s Armies.
III.
GOD DEMANDS THE BEST.
Exodus 20:2-7
2 “I am the Lord your
God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. 3 “You must not have any other god but me. 4 “You
must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the
heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5 You must not bow down
to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will
not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the
parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the
third and fourth generations of those who reject me. 6 But I
lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey
my commands.
Exodus 22:29-31
29 “You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe produce and
your juices. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to Me. 30 Likewise
you shall do with your oxen and your sheep. It shall be with its mother seven
days; on the eighth day you shall give it to Me.31 “And you
shall be holy men to Me…”
1. God
is not Happy with Whatever we Give Him.
2. God
does not accept every sacrifice.
Revelations 2:1-5
“Write this letter to the angel* of the church in Ephesus. This is
the message from the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand, the one
who walks among the seven gold lampstands: 2 “I know all the
things you do. I have seen your hard work and your patient endurance. I know
you don’t tolerate evil people. You have examined the claims of those who say
they are apostles but are not. You have discovered they are liars. 3 You
have patiently suffered for me without quitting. 4 “But I have
this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at
first! 5 Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do
the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your
lampstand from its place among the churches.
IV.
THERE’S JOY AND A GREAT REWARD FOR OUR GENEROSITY.
1.
There’s Blessing and Protection.
Malachi 3:10
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough
food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord
of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out
a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to
the test!
2.
We Get Temporal and Eternal Rewards.
Mark 10:17-30
17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down,
and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why
do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. 19 But
to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘you must not murder. You
must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You
must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’” 20 “Teacher,”
the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” 21 Looking
at the man, Jesus felt genuine love
for him. “There is still one
thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and
give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then
come, follow me.” 22 At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many
possessions. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his
disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!” 24 This
amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear children, it is very hard* to enter
the Kingdom of God. 25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of
God!” 26 The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world
can be saved?” they asked. 27 Jesus looked at them intently and
said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is
possible with God.” 28 Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you,”
he said. 29 “Yes,”
Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or
brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake
and for the Good News, 30 will receive now in return a hundred
times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along
with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have
eternal life.
3.
It’s More of a Blessing to Give.
Acts 20:35
35 And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in
need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to
receive.’”
