II. WHY SURRENDER
1. Jesus demands it
Luke 14:25-27;33
25 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate (love less) his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple…33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple.
Luke 9:57-62
57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” 61 And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
2. Jesus demonstrated it
John 6:38
"I am come down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of Him that sent me";
John 4:34
"My meat is to do the will of him that sent me";
Hebrews 10:7
…again, "Lo, I come... to do thy will, O God."
John 14:31
31 but I will do what the Father requires of me so that the world will know that I love the Father. NLT
3. You were made for it
Ecclesiastes12:13-14
13 That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.
Ecclesiastes 3:11NLT
“Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart…”
Proverbs 27:20 NKJV
Hell and Destruction are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied.
Ecclesiastes 1:8
All things are full of labor; Man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing.
4. You will be rewarded for it
John 12:24
24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.
Mark 10:28
28 Then Peter began to say to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You.” 29 So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, 30 who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.
III. DEGREES OF SURRENDER
1. God Tests for Maximum surrender
Genesis 22:1-2
Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
2. Perpetual Surrender
Hebrews 4:14-16
14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
