THE BEAUTY OF BAPTISM
I. ABOUT BAPTISM
1. Baptism (baptidzo)
Definition: means “to immerse, submerge, plunge, take under.” Therefore,
baptism is the immersion of a believer in water, to symbolize outwardly their
regeneration through union with Christ.
2. The Model:
a. Jesus Commanded Baptism
Matthew 28:18-20
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given
to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I
am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
b. Jesus was baptized
Matthew 3:13-17
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and
are You coming to me?”
15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is
fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water;
and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.
17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son,
in whom I am well pleased
c. Jesus’ disciples baptized people
John 4:1-3
1 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus
made and baptized more disciples than John
2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples),
3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee
d. Baptism became a standard practice of the Church
Acts 2:38,41
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in
the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit…
41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day
about three thousand souls were added to them
Acts 8:12,36-38; 9:18; 10:47,48; 16:14,15,33; 18:8; 19:4,15
II. DIGGER DEEPER
1. Only believers should be baptized
Matthew 28:19
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:40-41
40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved
from this perverse generation.”
41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about
three thousand souls were added to them.
2. Baptism symbolizes or pictures 3 things
a. Our faith in a crucified, buried and risen Savior
b. Our death to sin, the old life being buried and our resurrection to walk in a
new life
Romans 6:1-5
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus
were baptized into His death?
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just
as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we
also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly
we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection.
c. It expresses hope that we will be resurrected
Colossians 2:12
12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him
through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead
d. The method is emersion
Acts 8:38-39
38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the
eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught
Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way
rejoicing
III. EXPECTATION WHEN OBEYING ORDINANCES
1. Obedience and Faith bring Manifestation
2. The Communion Example
3. Expectations of Baptism
a. A solidifying of your faith (roots go deeper)
b. Greater victory over sin and the old man
c. A greater infilling of the Holy Spirit
d. More grace to walk in newness of life.
