Understanding the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit is an important concept in Christianity
Who are you running with?
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity,
Alongside God the Father and Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
1. The Holy Spirit is your leader.
Acts 1:4-8
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
2. What do leaders do? they lead,
For Him to lead you must submit
Example. Islam is an Arabic word that denotes submission, surrender, and obedience. Grace and Submission
How do one receive the
Holy Spirit?
John 14:18 if you love me keep my commandments, and I will pray to my father and He shall give you the comforter
What will change after you receive him
You shall receive power
Act 1:8 and you will receive power after the Holy Spirit come upon you
And you shall be my witness in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the end of the earth.
Old promises
3. He will empower you to represent me. Give you grace.
Ezekiel 36:26 I will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes
Joel 12:28 And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions
Proofs of the work of holy spirit in Jesus life and importance of the Holy Spirit in our life
Example: The Holy Spirit worked with the Lord while he was on earth.
1. Conception and Birth of Jesus:
The virgin birth of Jesus.
Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto Mary ,The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
2. Anointing for Ministry:
His approval for ministry
Matt 3:16-17 Jesus when he was baptized went straightway out of the water, and lo heavens were open into him and the spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him.
Lo the voice from heaven, saying this is my beloved son. In whom I am well pleased
This anointing empowered Jesus to carry out His earthly ministry: And fulfill the prophecies concerning Him (Isaiah 61:1-2).
Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
3. Equipping and Guidance:
A. Jesus relied on the Holy Spirit for guidance and empowerment of His ministry.
In Luke 4:1 it says that after His baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He was tempted by the devil.
B. Jesus was sensitive: to the leading and prompting of the Holy Spirit in His teachings, miracles, and interactions with people.
C. Power for Miracles and Healings:
Jesus performed many miracles, such as turning water into wine, multiplying food, healing the sick, and casting out demons. These acts of power were made possible through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Mat 12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.
4. Resurrection: After His crucifixion:
Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11). The Spirit played a crucial role in Jesus' triumph over death, demonstrating His divine authority and validating His sacrifice for mankind.
It is important to note that Jesus, being fully God and fully human, had a unique relationship with the Holy Spirit. As believers, we can also experience the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in our lives to guide, empower, and transform us.
Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
5. If the Holy Spirit was a Helper to the Son of God then we need to know Him.
Jabez understood that God can turn his life around
1 Chronicles 4:9
9 And Jabez was more honorable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested. KJV
