Mercy

Matthew 1:19

19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.


Leviticus 20:10 ‘the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife … the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death’


Deuteronomy 22:22 if a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die’.

Protection

Matthew 2:13-15 The Flight to Egypt

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 


14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”







Matthew 2

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.


22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.


Spiritual leadership


Luke 2

21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.


He was circumcised 


22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. 43 And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.

Matthew 13:55 (ESV): "Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?”


Mark 6:3 (ESV): "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary


Joseph showed:

Sacrifice

Protection

Leadership

Provision


Despite the fact that he was in the most difficult situation imaginable!


And if he can do it by the grace of God….. you can too!

Matthew 10:34-39 ESV - Not Peace, but a Sword

34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to

bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and

a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-

law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever

loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son

or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take

his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will

lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

1 important thing to clarify

Difference between purpose and assignment.

1 Peter 2:9

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special

possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of

darkness into his marvelous light.

Isaiah 43:7: "Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory,

whom I formed and made.”

Romans 11:36: "For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him

be glory forever. Amen.”

Philippians 2:10-11 in the ESV:

"So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth

and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the

glory of God the Father."

Chapter 3

1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the

ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily

at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those

entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he

stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him

Peter and John Before the Council

Chapter 4

1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the

temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they

were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the

dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it

was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed,

and the number of the men came to about five thousand.

5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in

Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander,

and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the

midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” 8 Then

elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a

of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of

man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by


you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in

no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which

we must be saved.”

15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with

one another, 16 saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable

sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of

Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further

among the people, let us warn them to……….. speak no more to anyone in this

name.” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in

the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in

the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we

cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 21 And when they had

further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish

them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had

happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was

more than forty years old.

21 Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children

will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 and you will be hated by

all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

The Words of Eternal Life

67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”

Blessings on Blessings

The Blessings of Being Chosen by God





Ephesians 1:3-5

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,


Blessed in greek = eulogetos

Which is where we get the English word Eulogy.


Everything Paul is saying in this chapter is a reason why you and I should Praise God with all of our Heart Soul Mind and Strength.


Reasons to praise: 

Ephesians 1:3

“He has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”


Spiritual blessings:


1. He chose us before the foundation of the world. Eph 1:4 

A. Ephesians 1:13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

B. You are in him when you believe.

C. The destination of these IN HIM is predetermined. 

D. Example: A planes destination is predetermined but only for those who board. 

E. God has predetermined the destination of all of those that enter Christ through faith.


In faith you have responsibility. The ability to respond.


1 Timothy 2:3-6 

3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

2. God has made us holy. (Set apart) eph 1:4


God has called the believer to be set apart from the wickedness around them and called to Christ likeness. 


Ephesians 1:4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love


Romans 12:1-2:

"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."


3. God made us blameless Eph 1:4 


As we walk in the light God makes us blameless through the blood of Christ. We are justified by our faith in Christ, and are no longer guilty of our trespasses. 


Ephesians 1:7: "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.”


1 John 1:7: "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin."


4. We have been adopted into his family. Ephesians 1:5

A. Benefits of being in Gods family: 

1. Prayer : 

1 John 5:14-15:

"And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”


2. Protection :

Proverbs 18:10:

"The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”


3. Provision :

Philippians 4:19:

"And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”


Matthew 6:31-33:

"Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."


4. Presence :

Psalm 139:7-10:

"Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me."


Psalm 16:11:

"You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."


5. God predestined us to a purpose eph 1:5 (Next week)


God has set us apart to accomplish his purposes on this planet. 


Ephesians 1:5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,


6. We have been redeemed eph 1:7 

(purchased from the slave market of sin) (see pastor Trey’s sermon from last week)


7. For forgiveness of sin eph 1:7

Given a clean slate before God (see pastor Trey’s sermon from last week)



8. God has given us an inheritance eph 1:11 


1 Peter 1:3-4:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.”


1 Corinthians 2:9. 

"But, as it is written, 'What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.'"



9. He has given us the Holy Spirit.


Ephesians 1:13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,



Roles of the Holy Spirit:


1. Helper and Comforter

John 14:16-17: "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you."


2. Teacher and Reminder

John 14:26: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”


3. Guide into All Truth

John 16:13: "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come."


4. Convicts the World of Sin, Righteousness, and Judgment

John 16:8: "And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment."


5. Giver of Spiritual Gifts

1 Corinthians 12:4-11: "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit... All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills."


6. Empowers Believers for Witness

Acts 1:8: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."


7. Intercedes for Believers

Romans 8:26-27: "Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God."


8. Transforms and Renews

Titus 3:5: "He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit."


9. Sanctifies Believers

1 Peter 1:2: "according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you."


10. Indwells Believers

1 Corinthians 6:19: "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own."


11. Produces Fruit in Believers

Galatians 5:22-23: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."


12. Testifies about Jesus

John 15:26: "But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me."


13. Reveals God’s Wisdom

1 Corinthians 2:10-11: "these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God."


14. Gives Life

Romans 8:11: "If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you."

Ephesians 1:1-14

1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. 13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Redemption /apolytrōsis/ (n.): deliverance; redemption; ransom in full

Forgiveness /aphesis/ (n.): freedom; pardon;  liberty; remission

Sin /paraptōma/ (n.): unintentional error or willful transgression, fall, fault, offense

The path from SIN to FORGIVENESS is the process of REDEMPTION and this is the call of salvation

The Weight of the Call—why is it so heavy?

The pervasiveness of sin. Sin invades every area of our lives and continues to grow.

Sin is commonly viewed as a ‘mishap’. “Everybody sins!”

What does the bible say about sin?

Hebrews 12:4 4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. /antagōnizomai/ v. : struggle against; to compete against; fight; labor fervently

Romans 6:12 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

Romans 6:16 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

Romans 7:11  11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.

When sin enters, it enslaves, reigns, deceives, and kills

1 Corinthians 15:54-56 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 

Sin is the weapon by which death injects its poison

CONTEXT:

The city of Ephesus is located in modern day Turkey. hosted around 250,000 residents

Ephesus was known as a city of size, wealth, and power.

The major economies of the city were rooted in trade and idol worship.

The temple of Artemis, located in the heart of the city, was prized as one of the seven wonders

of the ancient world.

The church at Ephesus was established 15-20 years after the death of Jesus Christ. 

Paul planted the church. And wrote them letters which are called Ephesians

While he was in prison in Rome. 


Three major roads led from the seaport:

One road went east towards Babylon via Laodicea (the rebuke was they left their first love)

Another to the north via Smyrna

A third south to the Meander Valley

On Paul’s second missionary journey (A.D. 52), he visited Ephesus after leaving Corinth, and

evidently planted the church there (Acts 18:19).

Acts 19:23-31

23 About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way. 24 For a man named

Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the

craftsmen. 25 These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, “Men,

you know that from this business we have our wealth. 26 And you see and hear that not only

in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great

many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods. 27 And there is danger not

only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great

goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her

magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”

28 When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the

Ephesians!” 29 So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into

the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were

Paul's companions in travel. 30 But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples

would not let him. 31 And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and

were urging him not to venture into the theater.

Ephesus

Revelation 2:1-7

2 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in

his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.

2 “‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those

who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them

to be false. 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and

you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love

you had at first. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works

you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you


repent. 6 Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He who

has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will

grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’


Ephesians 6:10-18 ESV

The Whole Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of

God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle

against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic

powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly

places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the

evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of

truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having

put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of

faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet

of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the

Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance,

bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man

I. PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOLOGY

There are many biological and physiological differences between men and

women.

1. Chromosomes: Women have two X chromosomes (XX), whereas men have one X

and one Y chromosome (XY). The Y chromosome contains the SRY gene, which

triggers the development of male characteristics.

The X chromosome carries many genes that are vital for various bodily functions.

Since women have two X chromosomes, they have two copies of these genes.

The Y chromosome is much smaller than the X chromosome and contains fewer

genes. It includes the SRY gene, which is crucial for the development of male

characteristics.


2. Hormones: Men have higher levels of testosterone, which influences muscle

mass, bone density, and body hair. Women have higher levels of estrogen and

progesterone, which regulate the reproductive cycle and affect the distribution

of body fat.

3. Reproductive System: Women possess ovaries, uterus, and other structures

necessary for ovulation, pregnancy, and childbirth. Men have testes, prostate,

and other organs supportive of sperm production and ejaculation.

4. Muscle Mass and Strength: Men typically have a higher percentage of muscle

mass and greater upper body strength compared to women, influenced largely

by testosterone.


5. Fat Distribution: Women tend to store more fat subcutaneously (under the skin,

II. GOD’S VALUE OF WOMEN

Gal 3:28

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male

nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus

What would the status of women be if Christ never came?

Ex. Lets look at countries who have rejected Christian Influence


 Some Islamic countries women still have to be veiled

 In Saudi Arabia can only drive since 2017

 Koran on Women:

A man has the right to beat and sexually desert his wife, all with the full

support of the Koran, which says,

“Men stand superior to women. . . .But those whose perverseness ye fear,

admonish them and remove them into bedchambers and beat them; but if

they submit to you then do not seek a way against them” (Sura 4:34). 3

 The Word

Eph 5:25,28

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself

for her, 28  So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who

loves his wife loves himself

1. Greeks and women

Athenian women were not permitted to leave her house unless she was

accompanied by a trustworthy male escort, commonly a slave appointed by

her husband. 4

The only woman who had some freedom was the hetaera (het era), or mistress, who

often accompanied a married man when he attended events outside his home. The

hetaera was the man’s companion and sexual partner. 5

 The average Athenian woman had the social status of a slave.

Ex. Female infanticide was much greater than male

2. Romans and Women

While many upper-class girls informally received some education in grammar

and reading, a Roman wife, like her Athenian counterpart, was not allowed to

be present with her husband’s guests at a meal. 6

There were numerous other restrictions on women as well. For instance, a

married woman was commonly under the Roman law of manus, which placed

her under the absolute control of her husband, who had ownership of her and

all her possessions. 7

A man could divorce her if she merely went out in public without a veil,

according to Plutarch (Romulus 22.3). She could never divorce him.

A woman could not even tell her husband’s slave what to do 8


This law was still in force in the early part of the fifth century and received

strong criticism from Augustine, the Christian bishop of Hippo in northern

Africa.

3. Hebrews and Women

Although it did not use women sexually in religious activities, the Hebrew

culture was in some other ways as badly biased against women as was the

culture of the Greco-Romans. This was particularly true during the rabbinic

era (ca. 400 B.C. to ca. A.D. 300). The rabbinic oral law (now essentially

recorded in the Talmud and Midrash), like the customs of the Greeks and

Romans, barred women from testifying in court (Yoma 43b). 9

4. Jesus and Women

a. He treated women humanely and respectfully

b. Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42)

Jesus taught Mary as a Rabbi against rabbinic oral law

5. Paul and Women

a. House church Leaders

Apphia, “our sister,” was a leader in a house church in the city of Colossae

(Philemon 2).

In Laodicea, there was Nympha, who had a “church in her house”

(Colossians 4:15).


In Ephesus, Priscilla, with her husband Aquila, had a church that met “at

their house” (1 Corinthians 16:19). Paul called Priscilla one of his “fellow

workers” (Romans 16:3)

Phoebe in Romans 16:1–2 is referred to by the male title of diakonos

(deacon), a position she held in the church at Cenchreae. Paul did not use

any feminine form of the word.

Pheobe  had a “position of authority in the churches.” 10

She was so highly regarded as a leader that scholars believe Paul even

chose her to deliver the Epistle to the Romans for him from Corinth to

Rome, a distance of 400 miles.

He chided the Pharisees for taking financial advantage of widows (Mark

12:40),

He commended the widow gave two mites in her offering (Luke 21:2–3).

Writing to Timothy, St. Paul urged him to have the Ephesian Christians,

especially the children and grandchildren, honor their widowed mothers (1

Timothy 5:3–4).

1. Tri-partate Being

 Mind: intellect, thoughts, reasoning, and cognitive functions.

 Will: volition, the ability to make choices and decisions.

 Emotion: feelings, passions, and desires.

Spirit

 Intuition: ability to sense and discern spiritual truths or realities without the

need for conscious reasoning. (knowing)

 Communion: Ability to commune with God

 Conscience: inner moral compass that convicts individuals of right and

wrong according to God's standards

2. Paul and Conscience

Rom 9:1

I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in

the Holy Spirit,


Acts 23:1

Then Paul, looking earnestly at the council, said, “Men and brethren, I have lived

in all good conscience before God until this day”

Acts 24:16 KJV

And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence

toward God, and toward men

3. Stewarding Conscience

The Story of the people of Judah under King Jehoshaphat


Jehoshaphat Defeats Moab and Ammon

1 After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to wage war

against Jehoshaphat.

2 Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from

Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). 


3 Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all

Judah. 4 The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came

from every town in Judah to seek him.


5 Then Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of

the Lord in the front of the new courtyard 6 and said:


“Lord, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the

kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand

you. 7 Our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and

give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend? 8 They have lived in it and have built

in it a sanctuary for your Name, saying, 9 ‘If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of

judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your

Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.’

10 “But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not

allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not

destroy them. 11 See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the

possession you gave us as an inheritance. 

12 Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that

is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

13 All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before

the Lord.

14 Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the

son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the

assembly.

15 He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is

what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army.

For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 

16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and

you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel.

 17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the

deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be

discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’”

18 Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and

Jerusalem fell down in worship before the Lord. 19 Then some Levites from the Kohathites

and Korahites stood up and praised the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.

20 Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood

and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord your God

and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.” 


21 After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to

praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army,

saying:

“Give thanks to the Lord,

    for his love endures forever.”


22 As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon

and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. 

23 The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and

annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy

one another.

24 When the men of Judah came to the place that overlooks the desert and looked

toward the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had

escaped. 

25 So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them a

great amount of equipment and clothing and also articles of value—more than they could take

away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it. 

26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berakah, where they praised the Lord.

This is why it is called the Valley of Berakah to this day.

27 Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to

Jerusalem, for the Lord had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies. 

28 They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the Lord with harps and lyres and

trumpets.

29 The fear of God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the Lord had

fought against the enemies of Israel. 

30 And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every

side.


Revelation 5:1-5 ESV

”Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on

the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice,

"Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?" And no one in heaven or on earth or

under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because

no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me,

"Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so

that he can open the scroll and its seven seals."“

Confide:
Living with confidence in God


“Rather than believing in confidence without faith……. We say we have faith but live without

confidence”


Definition of confidence:

The feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something.

The state of feeling certain about the truth of something.

But the word says his about trusting in the lord

Jeremiah 17:5-8

5 Thus says the LORD: "Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his

strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD.

6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the

parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.

7 "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD.

8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear

when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it

does not cease to bear fruit."


God says through Jeremiah

Don't trust in man….. Trust in God!!!!

In other words act like you know who he is!!!!!!

Did you forget all he’s done for you!!!!!?!?!?!?

Psalm 103:1-5

1Bless the Lord, O my soul,

    and all that is within me,

    bless his holy name!

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,

    and forget not all his benefits,

Darkness

Woe to those who call good evil and evil good.

Isaiah 5:20. (NIV):
"Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter.”

2 Timothy 3:1-5 (ESV):
"But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”

THEY WILL LOOK GODLY!

THE WORLD AND ITS FOLLOWERS PREACH:

not lover of self… just…self lovers…

not lacking self control… just… Turning up…

not being a lover of pleasure… just… having fun…

John 3:19-21
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

Jesus came into the world to expose the sinfulness of man and provide a way of escape!

But men refused his way of escape because they love the dark!

Romans 1 says: 
they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.”

But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

Deuteronomy 11:16
Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

James 1:22 - "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

Matthew 24:36-41
36 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. 39 And they were oblivious, until the flood came and swept them all away. So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left.

They will deceive themselves to the grave.

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."


What is our way out!

1 John 1:6-10
6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

We must walk in the light which is understanding the darkness of our sins confessing sins and turning from them!









Luke 8:9-14
The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”


Acts 2:40 (ESV):
"And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, 'Save yourselves from this crooked generation.’”

Jesus meets the 11 disciples after resurrecting:

Rising from the grave did a few instantaneous things for us:


Justification -  Romans 4:25 (ESV): "Who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification."


Newness of life - Romans 6:4 (ESV): "We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life."


Victory over death and sin - 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 (ESV): "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."



  1. Go and make disciples of all nations.
  2. Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
  3. Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.








What are we to share?:


John 3:16

God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.


Acts 13:38-39

Through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the Law of Moses 


Romans. 4:25

He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.


Titus 3:4-7

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 



Who are we to share it to?:

All nations all peoples all ethnicities all races.



Why should we share it?:

Romans 10:14-15 (ESV):

"How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!'"


And because he is worthy!



Two hinderances:


Fear of man and Hypocrisy
