2 Timothy 2:1-5
This know
also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For
men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without
natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce,
despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady,
highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having
a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
I.
LOOK WHAT SELF HAS
DONE.
1.
Lucifer and Self.
Isaiah 14:12-17
12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,You who weakened the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart:‘I will ascend into heaven, I
will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest
sides of the north; 14 I
will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ 15 Yet you shall
be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit. 16 “Those
who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying: ‘Is this the man who
made the earth tremble,Who shook kingdoms, 17 Who made the world as
a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of his
prisoners?
2.
Adam and Eve and Self.
Genesis 3:1-7
Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which
the Lord God had made. And he said
to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the
garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the
fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the
tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it,
nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 Then the
serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God
knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be
like God, knowing good
and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for
food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise,
she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he
ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew
that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
1 John 2:16
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves
the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all
that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride
of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
3.
The Law Depended on Self.
Romans 3:20-21
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His
sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the
righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law
and the Prophets.
Romans
3:27-28
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No,
but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is
justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
II.
SALVATION IS NOT
DEPENDENT ON SELF.
Romans 3:28
28 Therefore we conclude
that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
Romans 4:13-16
13 For the promise that he
would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the
law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those
who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no
effect, 15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there
is no law there is no transgression. 16 Therefore it is of
faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to
all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are
of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.
III.
SELF DENIAL IS THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL CHRISTIAN LIFE.
Luke
9:23-24
23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let
him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For
whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for
My sake will save it.
