John 4:5-26
So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
We are called to reach the lost
1. At the least give an answer
1 Peter 3:15
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear
2. Teach and Disciple
Mathew 28:19-20
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
3. Every Creature Must Hear
Mark 16:15
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature
a. by our life-
matt. 5:13
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
b. by witnessing-
Matt. 28:18; Mark 16:15
Two Sides To Salvation
1. Divine side
2. Human Side
Divine Side
Only the holy spirit can really save a man
Rom. 3:11-‘ none that seek after God’
Ps. 58:3- ‘wicked estranged from the womb’
I Co. 2:14- ‘natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God they are foolishness unto him
2 Co. 4:4- ‘Satan hath blinded the minds’
Jn. 6:44- ‘no man can come except the father draw him’
But God works with us to such a degree that w/o us many things will not be done
Human Side
Dr. John Gerstner
‘We can save no one, but unless we proclaim to them the gospel, God will save no one’
5 Laws Of Persuasion
Over the years people have learned that this is how the heart and mind reach conclusions and take action
1. Attention
2. Interest
3. Desire
4. Conviction
5. The close
Selling a Pen
Attention- are you a student, secretary, teacher, manager, salesman, ‘do you write often?’
Interest- I have something that is sure to improve your performance
Desire- special design actually relaxes the muscles to enable you to write better
Conviction- have you ever started a paper neat and near the end it go real sloppy cause your hand got tired
Close- this pen is your answer- try it and see how and it works
Look At How Jesus Used It
1. Attention
John. 4:7-
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
He begins where she was and got her attention; get the conversation going and get then related; no evidence you are about to witness. Be friendly, human, and real
2. Interest
Jn. 4:10
Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
Get them interested in what you have to say; most effective way is to use what Christ did for you or can do for them
3. Desire
Jn. 4:14
but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
You must cause desire; be enthusiastic not bored; you must be convinced yourself
4. Conviction
Jn. 4:16-18
Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
You really need this, you must have this; if you turn this down something is wrong with you
Expect an Intended Diversion
John 4:19,20
The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
He didn’t’ ignore it; he used part of it to bring her back
5. Close
John 4:25-36
The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
Bring them to a decision; confront them with the decision now; we must learn these and use them to critique our next presentation of the gospel
QUESTIONS TO ASK
· Did I fail to get their attention or hold their interest; if so why and what can I do to change this?
· How much desire was created for knowing Christ?
· Were they convicted concerning sins or need of forgiveness
· Did I confront the person clearly with his need to make a decision for Christ?
