Jesus The Divine Lover | Bishop Kyle Searcy | February 15th

JESUS THE DIVINE LOVER

1 Cor 13:1-8

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become

sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2  And though I have the gift of prophecy, and

understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could

remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3  And though I bestow all my goods

to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits

me nothing. 4  Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade

itself, is not puffed up; 5  does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked,

thinks no evil; 6  does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7  bears all things,

believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8  Love never fails.

INTRO: One of the Central Themes of the word of God is the Love of God.

1. It’s who God is.

1 John 4:8

He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

2. It’s the greatest Commandment

Matt 22:37-38

Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your

soul, and with all your mind.’ 38  This is the first and great commandment

3. It’s what we are called to walk in and grow in

Eph 5:1-2

Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also

has loved us and given Himself for us.

4. Love is a Grace / Power

2 Timothy 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound

mind

To understand Him You need to Understand Love…

I. THE SONG

1. The Song of Solomon is the greatest song ever written.

2. It is an illustration of the relationship between Jesus and the church (Rev.19:7-9,

21:9; Eph. 5:23-25; 2 Cor. 11:1-2).

Eph 5:22-25

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23  For the husband is head

of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.

24  Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their

own husbands in everything

3. The THREE main characters of the book

A. King Solomon – King Jesus

B. The Shulamite woman – The Bride (Church)

C. The “daughters of Jerusalem” Onlookers

II. SEVEN PICTURES OF THE POWER OF GODS LOVE THROUGH THE

SONG

1. The Love if Jesus Draws Us

Song 1:1-4

The song of songs, which is Solomon’s. 2 Let him kiss me with the kisses

of his mouth—For your love is better than wine.

Rom 2:4

“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and

longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to

repentance?”

Jer 31:3

“The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: ‘Yes, I have loved you with

an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.’”

Ex. My Story

2. The Love of Jesus Gives Us Confidence to Keep Growing

Song 1:5-7

I am dark, but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, Like the tents of Kedar,

Like the curtains of Solomon. 6 Do not look upon me, because I am

dark, Because the sun has tanned me. My mother’s sons were angry

with me; They made me the keeper of the vineyards, But my own

vineyard I have not kept. 7 Tell me, O you whom I love, Where you feed

your flock, Where you make it rest at noon. For why should I be as one

who veils herself By the flocks of your companions?

Ex. Adam Sinned and ran from Him

Ex. Peter and Judas

3. The Love of Jesus Shifts Our Identity

Song 1:12

While the king is at his table, my spikenard sends forth its fragrance.

Song 1:13-14

A bundle of myrrh is my beloved to me…My beloved is to me a cluster of

henna blooms In the vineyards of En Gedi

Song 2:1-4

I am the rose of Sharon, And the lily of the valleys. 2 Like a lily among

thorns, So is my love among the daughters. 3 Like an apple tree among

the trees of the woods, So is my beloved among the sons. I sat down in

His shade with great delight, And his fruit was sweet to my taste

Col 1:27

…Christ in us The hope of Glory

Col 2:9-10

For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10  and you are

complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

4. The Love of Jesus Challenges Us.

Song 8:1-17

The voice of my beloved! Behold, He comes Leaping upon the mountains,

Skipping upon the hills. 9 My beloved is like a gazelle or a young

stag…. 10 My beloved spoke, and said to me: “Rise up, my love, my fair one,

and come away. 11 For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. 12

The flowers appear on the earth; The time of singing has come… 13 The

fig tree puts forth her green figs, And the vines with the tender grapes

Give a good smell. Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away…. 15

Catch us the foxes, The little foxes that spoil the vines, For our vines have

tender grapes. 16 My beloved is mine, and I am his. He feeds his flock

among the lilies. 17 Until the day breaks And the shadows flee away, Turn,

my beloved, And be like a gazelle Or a young stag Upon the mountains of

Bether.

5. The Love of Jesus Disciplines Us

Song 3:1-4

By night on my bed I sought the one I love; I sought him, but I did not find

him. 2 “I will rise now,” I said, “And go about the city; In the streets and in

the squares I will seek the one I love.” I sought him, but I did not find him. 3

The watchmen who go about the city found me; I said, “Have you

seen the one I love?” 4 Scarcely had I passed by them, When I found the

one I love. I held him and would not let him go, Until I had brought him to

the house of my mother, And into the chamber of her who conceived me.

6. The Love of God Affirms Us

Song 4:1-7

Behold, you are fair, my love! Behold, you are fair! You have dove’s eyes

behind your veil…. 6 Until the day breaks And the shadows flee away, I will

go my way to the mountain of myrrh And to the hill of frankincense. 7 You

are all fair, my love, And there is no spot in you.

Ex. 1 in Billions

Ex. How was Job feeling about Himself and How was God feeling About

Him

7. The Love of God Produces Endurance

Song 5:2-

I sleep, but my heart is awake; It is the voice of my beloved! He knocks,

saying, “Open for me, my sister, my love, My dove, my perfect one; For

my head is covered with dew, My locks with the drops of the night.” 3 I

have taken off my robe; How can I put it on again? I have washed my feet;

How can I defile them? 4 My beloved put his hand By the latch of the

door, And my heart yearned for him. 5 I arose to open for my beloved, And

my hands dripped with myrrh, My fingers with liquid myrrh, On the handles

of the lock. 6 I opened for my beloved, But my beloved had turned away

and was gone. My heart leaped up when he spoke. I sought him, but I

could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer. 7 The

watchmen who went about the city found me. They struck me, they

wounded me; The keepers of the walls Took my veil away from me. 8 I

charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, If you find my beloved, that you tell

him I am lovesick!

THE DAUGHTERS OF JERUSALEM

9 What is your beloved More than another beloved, O fairest among women?

What is your beloved More than another beloved, That you so charge us

10 My beloved is radiant and ruddy, Chief among ten thousand. 11 His head is like

the finest gold; His locks are wavy, And black as a raven. 12 His eyes are like

doves By the rivers of waters, Washed with milk, And fitly set. 13 His cheeks are

like a bed of spices, Banks of scented herbs. His lips are lilies, Dripping liquid

myrrh. 14 His hands are rods of gold Set with beryl. His body is carved ivory Inlaid

with sapphires. 15 His legs are pillars of marble Set on bases of fine gold. His

countenance is like Lebanon, Excellent as the cedars. 16 His mouth is most sweet,

Yes, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, And this is my friend, O daughters

of Jerusalem!

6 Where has your beloved gone, O fairest among women? Where has your

beloved turned aside, That we may seek him with you

8. The Love of God Becomes Our Ultimate Seal

Song 8:6-7

Set me as a seal upon your heart, As a seal upon your arm; For love is as

strong as death, Jealousy as cruel as the grave; Its flames are flames of

fire, A most vehement flame. 7 Many waters cannot quench love, Nor can

the floods drown it. If a man would give for love All the wealth of his
