COURAGE TO STAND
Eph 6:10-18
10 Finally, my brethren,
be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on
the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the
devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of
this age, against spiritual hosts of
wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore
take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil
day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore,
having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of
righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the
preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the
shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of
the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the
sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying
always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this
end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints
I. OUR PATH
1.
Jesus
never minced words about what it means to follow Him.
Luke
9:57-62
57 Now it happened as
they journeyed on the road, that
someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And
Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 Then He
said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my
father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own
dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” 61 And another
also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” 62 But
Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back,
is fit for the kingdom of God.”
John 16:33
33 These
things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you
will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
John 15:20
20 Remember
the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If
they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they
will keep yours also.
2. Peter also told us what to expect
1
Peter 2:18-21
18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but
also to the harsh. 19 For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures
grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your
faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it
patiently, this is commendable before
God.
II. WAYS WE MUST STAND
1. Offensively
a.
Promised Land
Exo. 23:31
31 And
I will set your bounds from the Red Sea to the sea, Philistia, and from the
desert to the River. For I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your
hand, and you shall drive them out before you.
Exo
23:28-30
28 And I will send
hornets before you, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the
Hittite from before you. 29 I will not drive them out from
before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the beasts of the
field become too numerous for you. 30 Little by little I will
drive them out from before you, until you have increased, and you inherit the
land.
b.
Rehoboth
Gen
26:19-22
19 Also Isaac’s servants
dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there. 20 But
the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the
well Esek, because they quarreled with him. 21 Then they dug
another well, and they quarreled over that one
also. So he called its name Sitnah. 22 And he moved from there
and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name
Rehoboth, because he said, “For now the Lord
has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”
2. Defensively
c.
Warfare and Test
1
Peter 5:10
10 But may the God of all
grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have
suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever
and ever. Amen.

Like David at Ziklag
1
Sam 30:1-6
Now it happened, when David and his men came
to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and
Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, 2 and had
taken captive the women and those who were
there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way. 3 So
David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and
their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive. 4 Then
David and the people who were with
him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep. 5 And
David’s two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the
Carmelite, had been taken captive. 6 Now David was greatly
distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the
people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David
strengthened himself in the Lord
his God.
3. To Finish
Gal
6:9
9 And
let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we
do not lose heart.
Acts
20:24
24 But
none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I
may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord
Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.
III. HOW TO STAND
1. Release Faith
James
1:2-6
2 My brethren, count it
all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing
that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But
let patience have its perfect work,
that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 If any
of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without
reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with
no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and
tossed by the wind.
2. Live Abandoned
2
Cor. 5:13-15
13 For
if we are beside ourselves, it is for
God; or if we are of sound mind, it is
for you. 14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge
thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died
for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him
who died for them and rose again.
Phil
1:21
21 For
to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Gal
2:20
20 I
have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives
in me; and the life which I now live
in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself
for me.
3. Focus on Rewards
2 John 1:8
8 Look to yourselves,
that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.
4. Think About Him
a.
He has stood for us
Heb 12:2
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by
so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which
so easily ensnares us, and let us run
with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto
Jesus, the author and finisher of our
faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the
shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God
b.
He is worthy of our best
Rev
5:1-9
And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on
the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 Then I saw a strong angel
proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose
its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the
earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it. 4 So I
wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to
look at it. 5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep.
Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to
open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.” 6 And I looked,
and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in
the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven
horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the
earth. 7 Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand
of Him who sat on the throne. 8 Now when He had taken the
scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before
the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers
of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are
worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have
redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and
nation.
