THIS SAME SPIRIT

1.     Was at work in creating the universe.
Genesis 1:1-3
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Psalms 104:30
30 You send forth Your Spirit, they are created, And You renew the face of the earth.

2.     Wrote the Bible
2 Peter 1:20-21
20 knowing this first that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

2 Timothy 3:16
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Bible Prophecy is Unique
Unique among all books ever written, the Bible accurately foretells particular events in detail many years, sometimes centuries, before they occur. Approximately 2,500 prophecies appear in the pages of the Bible, about 2,000 of which already have been fulfilled to the letter—no errors. (The remaining 500 or so reach into the future and may be seen unfolding as days go past.) Since the probability for any one of these prophecies having been fulfilled by chance averages less than one in ten (figured very conservatively) and since the prophecies are for the most part independent of one another, the odds for all these prophecies having been fulfilled by chance without error is less than one in 102000 (that is 1 with 2,000 zeros written after it)!

·        The Composition of the Bible is Unique
-         It was 1,500 years in the making
-         The Bible was written by 40 different authors with many different occupations (shepherds, fisherman, tax collectors, military generals, politicians, members of royal households, etc.)
-         Most of the authors never knew each other
-         The scripture was written in different literary forms.(It’s a collection of letters, sermons, law, poetic descriptions, historical events, prayers, songs, and prophecies.)
-         The Bible was written on three different continents: Asia Africa and Europe
-         The scripture was written in three different languages. Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek
-         There is one unfolding story in the Bible. It’s a book in perfect continuity in harmony from beginning to end.

3.     Gave wisdom to Bezalel

He also sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

Judges 14:19
19 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father’s house,

Judges 15:14–15
14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting against him. Then the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the ropes that were on his arms became like flax that is burned with fire, and his bonds broke loose from his hands. 15 He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and killed a thousand men with it.

THE GIFTS OF HOLY SPIRIT
(Part III)

1 Corinthians 12:1-11
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant… There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gift of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kind of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

When the Holy Spirit Comes, He does several things
  • Born Again
John 3:3-5
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  • Wants to Baptize
Matthew 3:11
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  • Manifest Fruit
Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control…

  • Gives Gifts.  1 Corinthians 12:4-14.

I.            Facts Concerning the Gifts of the Spirit

1)   We should not be ignorant of them
1 Corinthians  12:1
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant.

2)   Spiritual Gifts will exalt Jesus.
1 Corinthians 12:2-3
You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however, you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

3)  There are different gifts but one Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:4
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

4)  There are different administrations
1 Corinthians 12:5
There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord

5)  There are different operations
1 Corinthians 12:6
And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

6)  The Holy Spirit decides who gets what gift
1 Corinthians 12:7
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one

7)  The gifts are given for the profit of all
1 Corinthians 12:7
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
8)  There are three categories of gifts
¨ Three Revelation Gifts
-          Word of Wisdom
-          Word of Knowledge
-          Discerning of Spirits
¨ Three Power Gifts
-          Gift of Faith
-          Working of Miracles
-          Gifts of Healing
¨Three Utterance Gifts
-          Prophecy
-          Divers Kinds of Tongues
-          Interpretation of Tongues

1 Corinthians 12:1-14

I.           The Gift of Prophecy

Def. To speak for God or to be his spokesman.

1)   Facts Concerning Prophecy
·         Old Testament Prophecy was mostly foretelling.
·         New Testament Prophecy is mostly forth telling.
·         Prophesying is more than preaching.
·         The operation of the simple gift of prophecy doesn’t make one a prophet.
·         We can all prophesy, but we can’t all be prophets.
·         The simple gift of prophecy is not a prediction.
·         The simple gift is edification exhortation and comfort
Examples:

Acts 21:8-9
And the next day we that were of Paul’s company departed and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him. And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. 10 And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. 11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

Acts 21:10-11.

II.        The Gift of Divers Kinds of Tongues

1)   Facts Concerning Divers Kinds of Tongues
·         The gift of tongues is a supernatural sign
·         The gift of tongues is unique to this dispensation
·         Purposes of speaking in tongues
-          Speaking Mysteries
1 Corinthians 14:2
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit, he speaks mysteries.
-          Magnifying God
Acts 10:46
46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

-          Edifying Ourselves
1 Corinthians 14:4
He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

-          Building up ourselves
Jude 20
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit

-          Praying in the Spirit
Ephesians 6:18
18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints

-          Tongues is primarily a devotional expression.

-          The gift of tongues is for public ministry

1 Corinthians 14:27-28
26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.

III.     The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues

Def.  A supernatural gift that renders the gift of tongues understandable to its hearers

1)   Facts Concerning Interpretation of Tongues
·         It can work in our private prayer life.
·         It is mostly for public ministry
·         It is not translation
·         It must be exercised in proper order.1 Corinthians 14:26.
