What Jesus’ Blood Did for Us

1 Peter 1:18-19

knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from you aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

I.               THE UNIQUENESS OF BLOOD 

 

1.     Life is in the Blood

Lev 17:11

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’

 

a.     Carries oxygen and nutrients to every cell  

b.     Removes carbon dioxide and waste from cells,

c.     Regulates bodies pH balance

d.     Regulates body temperature

e.     Contains messages (ex. Doctors determining what’s wrong from your blood)

f.      Blood is 8% of your body weight

g.     Adults have 5.8 quarts of blood

h.     Circulatory system circulates 2000+ gallons of blood per day

i.      Blood cannot be replaced or synthetically made

j.      Blood in our veins is Whole Blood in plasma

k.     55% of the Whole Blood is Plasma

l.      Plasma is 90% water with 10% hormones, glucose, clotting factors, electrolytes and oxygen.

m.   RBC’S make up 45% of your total blood volume. They carry oxygen and carbon dioxide from lungs to cells and from cells to lungs

n.     WBC’S and Platelets 1% of blood. They protect against viruses, bacteria and toxins

 

2.     Blood has a perpetual voice

Gen 4:9-10

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother? He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.

Hebrews 12:24

to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

 

3.     The Earth records blood shed

Genesis 4:11

So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

 

II.              SIN ALWAYS REQUIRES BLOOD

 

1.     Garden of Eden; Gen 3:21

2.     Abel’s Offering; Gen 4:2-5

3.     Noah’s Reconstruction; Gen 8:20-21

4.     Abraham on Moriah; Gen 22:13

5.     Exodus in Egypt Passover

6.     Tabernacle and temple blood from morning till evening; Exodus 22:29-30

 

WHAT DID IMPERFECT BLOOD DO?

 

1.     Burnt Offering

·      Spotless Animal

·      Laid hands on animal

·      Animal killed and offered as a whole burnt offering

 

2.     Temporary covering for sin

a.     Animal had to be spotless

b.     The person offering had to identify with the animal

c.     The person had to be involved with killing the animal

d.     This provided a temporary covering for sin

It did not purge the conscience

 

3.     Sin Offering

·      High Priest

·      Once per year

·      2 male goats for a sin offering

·      Ram for a burnt offering

 

4.     Forgiveness and removal of Sin

a.     Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16)

b.     One goat sacrificed for a sin offering for the people of Israel (Lev. 16:15)

c.     Second goat released into the wilderness (Lev 16:20-22)

d.     Sin offering provided forgiveness

e.     Other goat provided removal of sin

 

III.            JESUS THE PERFECT LAMB

 

John 1:29

Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world

 

Hebrews 9:26-28

but now, once at the end of the ages, He (Jesus) has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself… so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many

 

IV.            WHAT DID JESUS DO WITH HIS BLOOD?

 

1.     Entered into the Holy Place. 

Heb 9:12

Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

 

                      Redemption – lytrosis – set free, liberate, deliver, ransom, release

 

2.     Became Mediator of the New Covenant

Heb 12:24

to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel

 

3.     Reconciliation

To change. It deals with relationship. We are restores or changed back to right relationship with God.

Col 1:20

and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

·      Brings you into peaceful relationship with God

·      Gives free access to God and all of is resources

·      We are united with Jesus in His Death and risen in His resurrection 

·      We are a new creation and all has become new

·      Saved from penalty of sin (death) and the power of sin (enslavement)

 

4.     Justified us 

Rom 3:24-25

being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed.

 

Rom 5:9

Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him

 

Justification is the free and underserved act where God forgives all our sins, declares us free from any guilt and accepts us as righteous in his sight

 

Record expunged

Jesus became our substitute and paid the price for us

 

On the cross God treated Jesus as if He lived your life so He can treat you as if you lived His life

 

“When God looks at the cross He sees you and when he looks at you he sees Jesus”

 

·      Justification means peace with God

·      Justified from everything law of Moses couldn’t do

·      Sets us free from Condemnation

·      No one can bring any charge against us

·      We are saved from God’s Wrath

·      We shall reign in life through Jesus Christ

 

5.     He Bought us

1 Cor 6:20

For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

 

Agorazo – 

(agora) – to buy in a market

Agorazo – To buy in a slave market (We were slaves sold under sin Rom 6:23; Rom 7:14)

Exagorazo – to buy out of the market by purchasing and removing from sale.

 

Gal 3:13

Christ has redeemed (exagorazo) us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”)

 

6.     Brought us near 

Eph 2:13

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

 

            WHAT

 

The Blood is our only Plea

Rev 12:11

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.
