Biblical Requirements for Women Seeking to Marry, pt 1

• Ephesians 5:22-24, 33 ²² Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. ²³ For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. ²⁴ Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. ³³ Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
• Genesis 2:18-25 ¹⁸ And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” ¹⁹ Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. ²⁰ So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. ²¹ And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. ²² Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. ²³ And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” ²⁴ Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. ²⁵ And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

What does the Bible require of the wife?

• To help her husband

Genesis 2:18

¹⁸ And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 

• Carry his burdens with him
• Help him in the way he needs help

• You must respect your husband

Ephesians 5:33b

³³ Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

• Basic respect is not earned, it’s always given
• Soldiers in the armed services are taught to give respect even when their superiors haven’t earned it
• Public rebuke/disagreements (if they ever occur) are extremely rare
• Never discuss his failures with your peers

• Love and obey your own husband

Titus 2:3-4

³ the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— ⁴ that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, ⁵ to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.

• No one should have more outside influence on your personal affairs than your husband

• Render sexual rights unto him

1 Corinthians 7:4

⁴ The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

• Buy-in and agreement from both parties are required
• Obstacles must be overcome together
• Sometimes you need prayer and supplication
• Sometimes you need prayer and supplements
• The goal is fulfillment of both partners within the confines of marriage

• Submission to his leadership

Ephesians 5:22-24

1 Peter 3:1-2

Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, ² when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.

• It doesn’t mean become a ‘yes’ woman
• Sub: under   Mission: an important assignment accompanied by strong conviction 
• Support his convictions

• Excel them all

Proverbs 31:10-12, 28-29

¹⁰ Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. ¹¹ The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. ¹² She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. 

²⁸ Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ²⁹ “Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.”

Proverbs 12:4 ⁴ An excellent wife is the crown of her husband,
But she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.
