Disciplined and Defended

The parent has a responsibility to teach the child

  • Deuteronomy 11:18-19 “Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
  • Ephesians 6:4 “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”
  • Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother
  • Psalm 127:3 “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb is a reward.”

Heritage: [nachalâh] (nakh-al-aw’) An heirloom

Eli the Priest/Judge/Father

Read 1 Samuel chapters 2 and 3

  • 1 Samuel 3:13 “For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.”
  • 1 Samuel 2: 29 “Why do you kick at my offering which I have commanded in my dwelling place, and honor your sons more than Me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel My people?”

Positions of law/authority allow or disallow certain things.

  • “It may be true that morality cannot be legislated, but behavior can be

regulated.”

  • “It may be true that the law cannot change the heart, but it can restrain the

heartless.”

  • “It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can restrain

him from lynching me.”

  • “And so, that while legislation may not change the hearts of men, it does

change the habits of men.” ---Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  • Authority can only be given by one who is authorized.
  • It is not visible, only its effects can be seen
  • Parents have authority from conception
  • Children have a responsibility to be protected

  • Malachi 4:6 “And He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to the fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”
  • Deuteronomy 4:9-10a Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren…

The heart can only be returned if it has first turned away

  • Colossians 3:21 “Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.”

Discouraged: [athumeo] To be broken in spirit or spiritless

  • Proverbs 7:2 Keep my commands and live

Those closest to us have the ability to inflict the most damage

  • Luke 11:17 But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls.”
